Kiteboarding / Kitesurfing in the Dominican Republic
Kiteboarding is the hottest new watersport on the planet and the Dominican Republic offers conditions that fit with it perfectly. While there are areas all over the island that it can be practiced, Kite Beach, just outside Cabarete, is considered to be the best place in the Dominican Republic, if not one of the best places in the world. The Eastern Trade Winds blow side-shore (right to left) across the bay. The winds are light in the morning, picking up as the day goes on. The outer reef provides ensures flatter waters within the bay and wavy conditions both on and outside it. The winds tend to be a little lighter in the winter but this is when swell (waves) are generally at their biggest. The summer tends to provide less swell (waves) but stronger wind conditions. A number of schools at Kite Beach and in Cabarete provide the training grounds for those who are eager to learn, or those who wish to rent or store equipment.
The Cabarete Kiteboarding World Cup: Each June, Cabarete hosts the biggest and most exciting stop on the PKRA (Professional Kiteboarding Riders Association) World Tour, where the very best kiteboarders in the world visit to show their stuff and compete for tens of thousands of dollars in prizes.
